In celebration of 25 years of GEAR UP and National GEAR UP Week<\/a> September 23-27, MAD-learn is pushing into classes around the country to promote college and career readiness through mobile app development and engaging, hands-on activities.  MAD-learn will be in Texas – Coldspring-Oakhurst and San Marcos – as well as Miami-Dade, to help students develop future-ready skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t wait to work with students in alignment with the GEAR UP mission  \u201cto ensure that underserved students have the opportunity, skills, and knowledge to successfully pursue the education and training that will enable them to achieve their career and life goals. We work towards a future where all students are empowered and equipped with the education and training needed to succeed in a diverse and global society,\u201d according to the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deadline to enter the Congressional App Challenge is quickly approaching. This national app-building competition encourages students around the country to submit their original apps to promote appreciation for computer science and STEM, according to their website<\/a>.  The deadline to submit apps is October 24, 2024.  Learn more about this event as well as guidelines on how to enter here<\/a>.  MAD-learn is proud that many of our MAD-students enter this challenge each year.  Check out the 2023 winners here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are so excited to see our CTE Southeast region teachers from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Looking for a fun and engaging way to reinforce content and curriculum?  Start a weekly app creator challenge using MAD-learn.  Challenge students to create an app based on a specific theme each week.  Perhaps it\u2019s classroom rules, routines, and norms to help them adjust to being back in school, or an app that reinforces the current unit they are studying.  Because MAD-learn is user-friendly and intuitive, students can create their own mobile apps independently or as an \u201cearly finishers\u201d assignment.  Up the ante by offering rewards such as homework passes, lunch in the classroom or students who create an app can enter in a raffle to be eligible for a prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At MAD-learn, we are always excited when new teachers learn how they can integrate mobile app development in their classrooms.  However, we take just as much joy and pride in teachers who make it a point to share mobile app development with students year after year.  Mekisha Parks is one of those teachers.  She has exemplified what it means to be a MAD-teacher and expert by integrating MAD-learn into her middle school computer and technology curriculum at Holy Innocents Episcopal School for the past few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her students have already kicked off the school year creating apps on a range of topics including Greek gods, fantasy books, plants around the world, and powerlifting – and she has even had students publish their apps.  One of our favorites is the app How to Make a PB+J because we had the opportunity to see – on the backend – just how much work and effort the student put into creating it. We love seeing all of your students\u2019 apps and can\u2019t wait to see even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
