The MAD-learn team has been busy facilitating App Camps all over the Southeast these last few weeks. First, we stopped in Port Arthur, Texas to teach middle schoolers about mobile app development. They created apps on everything from an app to teach single dads the basics of child-rearing to art history dating back to the 1800s. Then, it was off to Jacksonville, Florida where 9th and 10th graders at KIPP Bold City HS created resume apps to showcase their accomplishments and skills and prepare for College and Career. MAD-learn hosted its first-ever Student Showcase during #CSEdWeek. We were so excited by the incredible students who presented and the positive feedback from teachers, friends, family, and attendees, that we\u2019ve decided to make it an annual event! Students from around the country and ranging in age from 5th grade to 11th grade proudly shared the apps they created with poise and maturity. It was a treat to\u00a0hear directly from students<\/a>\u00a0about their experience with MAD-learn and mobile app development and how much they learned through the process. Said Jalexy A., who created the app Sport of Fame during a summer app camp \u201cI learned how to code, how to make an app and had a fun time doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No better way to round up the Fall Semester and the year than with some great conferences and presentations! We had the privilege of presenting sessions with Sean Arnold, Michele Fitzsimmons, Matthew Joseph, and more\u00a0at NYSCATE in Rochester, NY, and with Heather Singmaster and Digital Promise at ACTE Vision in Phoenix, AZ. Check out all the fun photos from these two conferences!<\/p>\n\n\n

Avonworth Jr. High, just North of Pittsburgh, hosted its first annual \u201cGenius Hour\u201d, an event conceived by MAD-teacher Nicole Findon and others. Students created apps or websites based on careers they would be interested in pursuing. Several visitors came and listened to the students’ pitches, then voted on the best products. Students were also rated on the quality of presentation, understanding of the career they chose, and originality of approach. Ms. Findon had over 50 students participate in the event over the course of three days. MAD-learn’s own Gregg Stone was fortunate enough to attend one of the days. He noted that every student he spoke with enjoyed working with the intuitive and easy-to-use MAD-platform. One in particular said, “Our teacher showed us the general steps, and we were basically able to take it from there on our own!” The Genius Hour was a great success in helping Avonworth build community and give their students an authentic experience. As always, MAD-learn is proud to have helped make it happen!<\/p>\n\n\n

We wanted to shout out MAD-teacher Leah Gaubert, a computer science teacher, who has rallied to get teachers at her middle school excited about mobile app development in their classrooms. She organized a whole staff PD and now, thanks to her, we have multiple teachers and students – in computer science and ELA classes – creating mobile apps at Betty Gray MS in Cobb County. Way to go, Leah! We love promoting computer science across the curriculum.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
